National Parks
Skeleton Coast National Park:
The so-called Skeleton Coast is a 40 km wide and 500 km long coastal stretch in Namibia, a hostile but fascinating area. Here, the cold and unpredictable Benguela Current of the Atlantic Ocean clashes with north-western Namibia's dune and desert landscape. Despite the hostile character of the Skeleton Coast, there are several wild animals to observe, for example, desert-adapted elephants, rhinos, desert lions, brown hyenas, jackals, giraffes, seals, oryx, kudus and zebras. Also, some plants are incredibly adapted to the rainless area of the Skeleton Coast and depend solely on the daily fog from the Atlantic Ocean: welwitschias! Nara melons, several lithops succulent plants (often called “living stones”), lichen and pencil bush (ink bush).
Hoanib Valley (Kaokoveld region):
Kaokoland is sometimes referred to as Namibia’s favourite off-road destination. With an interesting landscape, local culture and game-viewing opportunities, Kaokoland is an utterly unique destination. The Kaokoveld is part of the Kunene Region in the far northwest of Namibia. The Kunene River borders the Kaokoveld in the north, the Atlantic Ocean in the west and the Central North Region in the east and Damaraland. Parts of the scenic Kaokoveld are very secluded, pervaded by mountain ranges and dry river beds. It is home to the Ovahimba, the last true nomads of Namibia, who trek through the area in search of water and good pastures.
