National Parks

A UNESCO World Heritage Site covering up to 15,000 km², this inland delta is created by the Okavango River fanning out across the Kalahari sands. Seasonal floods transform the arid landscape into a lush wetland, supporting huge concentrations of wildlife. Known for mokoro (dugout canoe) safaris, it provides sanctuary to elephants, hippos, crocodiles, lions, leopards, and an extraordinary diversity of birds and aquatic life.

Zimbabwe’s largest national park (over 14,600 km²), Hwange is a vast expanse of Kalahari sandveld, dry acacia scrub and grasslands in the west of the country. It is famed for its huge “super-herds” of elephants – over 40,000 roam the park – and is one of Africa’s strongholds for endangered African wild dogs. Visitors can encounter a great variety of wildlife including large lion prides, buffalo herds, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, hyenas and 400+ bird species, often congregating at Hwange’s many waterholes during the dry season.

Botswana’s second-largest national park (~10,566 km²), Chobe is an elephant stronghold known for huge herds (Africa’s highest density) and diverse wildlife along the Chobe River, plus superb birdwatching and scenic boat cruises.
