National Parks

A vast 20,226 km² park in central Tanzania, Ruaha is often called the country’s “best kept secret.” It boasts spectacular baobab-studded landscapes and represents a transition between East and Southern African ecosystems, resulting in exceptional biodiversity – over 1,650 plant species and 526 bird species have been recorded. Wildlife is abundant (large elephant and buffalo herds, plentiful lions, leopards and cheetahs, plus rarer species like sable antelope), yet only a third of the park is used for tourism, leaving an immense untouched wilderness.

Tanzania’s newest and largest national park – formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve – covering over 30,000 km² (over 5% of Tanzania’s land area) in the remote south. Centered on the Rufiji River system, Nyerere offers a true wilderness safari with high densities of wildlife (elephants, hippos, crocodiles, lions, buffalo and more) and one of Africa’s largest populations of the endangered wild dog, in an untouched mosaic of rivers, lakes, and miombo woodlands.
