National Parks

Kenya’s most famous reserve (~1,510 km²) adjoining Tanzania’s Serengeti. Renowned for the annual Great Migration, where over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles cross the Mara River. The reserve supports high densities of predators, including lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas. Rolling savannahs, riverine forests, and acacia woodlands make it a biodiversity hotspot with over 450 bird species.

Tanzania’s flagship park, covering ~14,763 km² of rolling plains, kopjes, and riverine forests. The Serengeti hosts Earth’s greatest large-mammal migration: each year nearly 2 million wildebeest, zebras and gazelles follow the rains in a epic circular trek. It’s also famed for its predators – the vast plains sustain around 3,000 lions, plus many leopards, cheetahs, hyenas – offering some of the most spectacular wildlife viewing on the planet.

A scenic 330 km² park lying at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment in northern Tanzania. Two-thirds of the park is the shallow, alkaline Lake Manyara, a bird-lover’s paradise home to flamingos and over 350 other bird species. The diverse habitats (lake, floodplain, groundwater forest and acacia woodland) also harbor elephants, buffalos, giraffes and the park’s famous tree-climbing lions lounging in umbrella trees.

A relatively small (62 km²) but wildlife-rich park centered on an alkaline lake in Kenya’s Rift Valley. Lake Nakuru National Park is famous for its seasonal masses of flamingos painting the lakeshore pink, and for its rhino sanctuary (both black and white rhinos). It also harbors about 450 bird species and 50+ mammal species ranging from Rothschild’s giraffes to tree-climbing lions.

A freshwater lake and surrounding park in the Great Rift Valley, Kenya. Lake Naivasha’s shallow waters and fringing acacia forests attract over 400 bird species (a birdwatcher’s paradise) and a large hippo population; giraffes, buffaloes, colobus monkeys and other wildlife roam the shore, drawn by the lake’s life-giving waters.

One of Kenya’s iconic parks (392 km²) lying at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro on the Kenya–Tanzania border. Amboseli is famed for its free-ranging elephant herds (among the best places in Africa for up-close elephant encounters), five distinct habitats (from wetlands to woodlands), and postcard-perfect views of Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped peak.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest unbroken volcanic caldera and is regarded as the 8th wonder of the world. It is one of the most diverse and fascinating areas of Tanzania and has been given the status of a World heritage site and International Biosphere Reserve. The fertile slopes and steep forest-covered walls are home to approximately 30,000 animals including the rare black rhino. The various ecosystems found within the 260 square kilometre crater floor sustain Cape buffalo, elephants, wildebeest, zebras, elands, gazelles, hippos, numerous bird species as well as a high concentration of predators. Although birdlife is generally good throughout the year, from November to April, migratory birds from Europe and Northern Africa are present and many resident birds are in breeding plumage.
