Africa’s oldest national park (founded 1925) covering ~7,900 km² in the Virunga Mountains of eastern DRC. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Virunga boasts exceptional biodiversity – from swamps and savannas to glaciers – and is the only park in the world with three great ape species (mountain gorillas, lowland gorillas, chimpanzees) plus two active volcanoes (Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira).
