Kenya’s Wildlife Safari Destinations
Kenya offers the ultimate ‘Out of Africa’ safari experience. With world-class national parks, it makes Kenya one of the most popular honeymoon and family safari destinations.
Masai Mara National Reserve
The migrating herds of zebra and wildebeest usually arrive in the Masai Mara National Reserve sometime in July and remain until October. During this time, the herds often cross back and forth across the Mara River. These river crossings can be dramatic, with crocodiles and lions waiting to ambush. The Masai Mara is known for its excellent “big cat” sightings. Even outside the migration season, the Masai Mara region offers spectacular game-viewing opportunities.
Amboseli
Amboseli offers superb game-viewing with Mount Kilimanjaro as the impressive scenic backdrop. It is the best place in Africa to get close to the large population of elephants.
Lake Nakuru
Lake Nakuru is one of the few parks fenced off as a sanctuary to protect the highly endangered Rothschild giraffes and black and white rhinos.
Lake Naivasha
Lake Naivasha is the highest of the Rift Valley lakes. It is a freshwater lake and home to an incredible variety of bird species.
Tsavo East National Park
Tsavo East National Park is generally very popular for short safaris from the Kenya coast, like Mombasa.
Tsavo West National Park
Tsavo West National Park is known for its extreme and striking scenery. Its diverse landscape includes swamps, natural springs, rocky peaks, extinct volcanic cones, rolling plains and sharp reddish outcrops.
Samburu Reserve
The Samburu Reserve is home to several rare game species and is another must-see on any Kenyan safari.
Mount Kenya
Straddling the equator at 5199m, Mount Kenya is the second-highest mountain in Africa and offers a picturesque climb.
Aberdare National Park
Aberdare National Park is famous for its black rhino population, giant forest hogs, elephants, and a range of antelope and gazelle. The unique lodges overlook floodlit waterholes and a salt lick, which attracts a host of wildlife, offering the ultimate “armchair safari.”
Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Ol Pejeta Conservancy is an outstanding wildlife gem. It is home to the last two northern white rhinos on the planet! Ol Pajeta is East Africa’s most prominent black rhino sanctuary and the only place in Kenya where you can see chimpanzees.
Laikipia Plateau
Lying on the edge of the Northern Frontier, the Laikipia Plateau stretches from the slopes of snow-capped Mount Kenya to the rim of the Great Rift Valley. The ranges and private reserves within the Laikipia area offer some of the most luxurious and exclusive safari lodges in Africa. With more mammals than anywhere else in East Africa, Laikipia has enormous elephant herds and is the exclusive home to the endangered Jackson’s hartebeest and black rhino.
