The Three Different Types of Serengeti Safari Accommodation

Mariska Griffin • Nov 09, 2020

1# Traditional Serengeti lodge accommodation

The name `Serengeti’ is derived from the Maasai word Siringitu, which means: "endless plains." It is rich in biodiversity, easily accessible and offers some of the best safari experiences in Africa.

The Serengeti safari park covers a vast area. You will see that the Serengeti offers a variety of accommodation options, from romantic tented camps to exclusive safari lodges.

One of our main criteria when selecting a camp or a lodge for your Serengeti safari tour is that they are in the best possible location to see the wildebeest migration. With this, there are other key elements to consider when choosing your lodge or camp. Views of your room or tent, number of rooms, food quality, dining arrangements, relaxation opportunities and general game viewing potential in the area are all essential factors to consider.

Serengeti lodge accommodation

Safari lodges in the Serengeti, Tanzania, are permanent constructions, built with brick and mortar. These lodges accommodate large numbers of people, with some properties having 60+ rooms and usually have complete facilities such as conference rooms, business centre, swimming pools, gyms, air conditioning, libraries, etc.

Our Top Recommended Lodges in Serengeti National Park:

Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti (Central Serengeti) – This luxurious lodge with its amazing views and a watering hole is undoubtedly one of the most memorable ways to experience the Serengeti.

Meliá Serengeti Lodge (Central Serengeti) – a luxury lodge that blends into its natural surroundings without relinquishing the services and facilities of a luxury hotel.

Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge (Central Serengeti) – this semi-luxury African-style lodge offer panoramic views across the Serengeti’s vast, endless plains.

2# Serengeti Safari tented accommodation

Tented Camps are generally considered the best for an authentic Serengeti safari experience. Most Serengeti safari camps are small with between 5 and 10 tents. The camps we recommend all feature, spacious canvas rooms with real beds and private en-suite bathroom facilities and with a dining area with gourmet food. Far from roughing it, they're every bit as luxurious as lodges. Tented camps are found in the medium, semi-luxury and luxury tiers of accommodation.

Our Top Recommended Tented Safari Camps in Serengeti National Park:

Namiri Plains (Eastern Serengeti) – tucked away in a grove of fever trees, is a small and very exclusive and intimate camp which has terrific views over the endless sweeping plains of the Serengeti.

Lemala Nanyukie Tented Lodge (Eastern Serengeti) – located just outside of the Seronera circuit allowing for some private game viewing, but in reach of the famous Seronera, known as the big cat area of the Serengeti.

Sayari Tented Camp (Northern Serengeti) – located right up on the Mara River, its spacious and luxurious tented suites offer panoramic views of the vast Serengeti plains and the wildlife that inhabit the area.

Dunia Camp (Central Serengeti) – an intimate tented camp perfectly located not only to catch the Wildebeest Migration but also for excellent game viewing.

Karibu River Camp (Northern Serengeti) – located close to the famous Mara River, for an unforgettable migration experience.

Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge (Central Serengeti) – located in one of the hotspots for migrating wildebeest in Tanzania.

Mbuzi Mawe Serena Tented Camp (Central Serengeti) – known as 'the place of the klipspringer' (mbuzi mawe), the camp is set amid the bush and rocky outcrops of the central Serengeti.

Singita Mara Rivier Tented Camp (Northern Serengeti) – meets the demands of an increasingly discerning traveller for an authentic and meaningful connection with nature.

#3 Mobile tented accommodation

These camps are also known as seasonal and temporary camps as they are often erected for three month periods as they following the great wildebeest migration, putting you in the best locations for excellent game viewing. Accommodation varies from simple dome tents to luxurious, classic styled safari tents. Tents are equipped en-suite bathrooms with bucket shower and toilets.

Serengeti Mobile tented accommodation

For the adventure-seekers, we recommend mobile camps which allow you to be fully immersed in nature and which give you a front-row seat to the migration herds.

Serengeti Under Canvas - witness the wildebeest migration on a luxurious safari in the care of your personal butler and specialist guides.

Sanctuary Kichakani Camp – a luxury mobile tented camp that moves with the wildebeest migration herds throughout the year.

Olakira Migration Camp – known for its superb locations during the migration, the camp has great surprises that await you – like its stargazing tents.

Kati Kati Tented Camp – it is a simple tented camp that moves with the great annual migration.

Classic big game viewing, luxury accommodation & migration river crossings – the Serengeti National Park delivers an unbeatable safari!
